Courage to Begin Again: Dora’s Journey to Freedom

Courage to Begin Again: Dora’s Journey to Freedom

Dora* came to the United States from Central America, fleeing gang violence and hoping for a chance at safety. Her journey through Mexico was filled with danger. She was kidnapped by cartel members and suffered greatly before finally making it to the United States.

Here, Dora met her husband through family. What started as a wonderful relationship quickly turned frightening. As physical violence escalated, Dora found herself trapped in an abusive home with no support system. While enduring years of fear and control, she gave birth to twins. Slowly, her husband isolated her from everyone she knew, essentially keeping her as a prisoner in her own home.

With the help of a compassionate work colleague, Dora finally found a way to escape with her sons. After seeking legal help, she came to Justice for all Immigrants (JFAI) to explore her options for relief. Our Attorney helped her file a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) case and an application for adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident.

Though her case is still pending because of long processing delays, she may wait years for a final decision. However, Dora has already been granted work authorization, giving her the ability to earn income and care for her sons without any support from her ex-partner. She is now rebuilding her independence, healing, and thriving after leaving her abusive marriage.

This Giving Tuesday, you can stand with survivors like Dora as they fight for safety, stability, and a chance to rebuild.
